A postal worker is among the fatalities in a devastating stabbing spree in Rockford, Illinois.
Authorities reported four fatalities and five injuries following the violent outburst on Holmes Street’s 2300 block, occurring approximately at 1:15 pm on Wednesday.
Rockford’s Police Chief Carla Redd described responding to calls across “multiple locations.”
Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered three individuals deceased, with a fourth succumbing to their wounds at the hospital.
As of 4:15 pm local time, one victim remained in critical state at the medical facility.
“We’ve detained a suspect who’s undergoing an interview as we speak,” Chief Redd declared, noting they’re not pursuing other suspects at the moment.
Sheriff Gary Caruana of Winnebago County indicated that the incident spanned several addresses.
The Sheriff recounted that a victim suffered numerous stab wounds to her face and hands, and a Good Samaritan who intervened also needed medical assistance.
Early reports indicated that a mail carrier was among those attacked.
Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara, in a statement to My Stateline, expressed the city officials’ dismay at the “horrific act of violence.”
“The perpetrator has been apprehended, and the immediate danger has been contained,” Mayor McNamara affirmed. “With the suspect now in custody, our focus is on supporting the community members affected by this tragedy through their recovery.
“Agencies from multiple jurisdictions are piecing together the events at several crime scenes to understand the circumstances and prevent future incidents. We will keep the public informed with further updates,” he concluded.
