With so many skincare tips and tricks circulating online, it’s easy to get confused about what’s right for your skin. Yet, one small change could make a significant difference in your appearance.

Fresha, a global wellness marketplace, examined the 100 most-viewed beauty tutorials on TikTok to identify common errors in daily skincare routines. They found that 60 percent of influencers made the same basic mistake, which could speed up the aging process, according to the Mirror.

The error? Rubbing skincare products like creams, ointments, and oils onto the skin with too much force. Though it seems minor, harsh rubbing can lead to inflammation and more wrinkles over time.

Fresha’s findings align with the advice of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), which recommends gentle cleansing twice a day to maintain youthful skin. “Scrubbing your skin clean can irritate your skin,” the AAD explains. “Irritating your skin accelerates skin aging. Gentle washing helps to remove pollution, makeup, and other substances without irritating your skin.”

As skincare routines gain popularity on social media, some users are experimenting with unusual methods to combat aging. For example, Jennifer Aniston recently shared that she uses salmon sperm facials (known as PDRN) to keep wrinkles at bay.

Fresha’s research also suggests additional ways to improve your skincare regimen, such as using products in the correct order and not neglecting your neck and chest. Toner, often overlooked, is crucial for restoring the skin’s pH and preparing it to absorb products like moisturizer.

Moisturizer is essential for locking in moisture and promoting a youthful appearance. The AAD recommends using moisturizer at least once a day and even more if it contains SPF. “Whether spending a day at the beach or running errands, sun protection is essential,” the AAD notes. “You can protect your skin by seeking shade, wearing sun-protective clothing, and using sunscreen with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.”

Fresha’s study is a reminder that even small changes in how we treat our skin can make a big impact over time. By adopting a gentler approach to skincare, you could help maintain a youthful glow and reduce the risk of premature aging.
